(St. Paul, MN) -- Governor Tim Walz is authorizing Minnesota National Guard troops to provide security services in St. Paul.
The response comes as the federal civil rights trial continues for three former Minneapolis police officers in connection with the death of George Floyd. Guard members will also be on alert to respond to Minneapolis if violence breaks out during protests of the police killing of Amir Locke. Locke was killed during a no-knock warrant raid seeking a different suspect when police say he pointed a gun at them.
In the meantime, the judge in the Derek Chauvin trial also signed the no-knock warrant that resulted in the shooting death of Locke.
The content of the warrants and underlying affidavits connected to a January St. Paul murder case are sealed, but published reports say Locke was not the subject of the warrant. Hennepin County Courts spokesperson Matt Lehman says the Minnesota Code of Judicial Conduct prohibits Judge Cahill from commenting on any warrant he signs.
Locke was shot and killed last week when police involved in the raid say he pointed a gun at them and refused commands to get on the floor.
