(Mandan, ND) -- A North Dakota research lab is responding to allegations of animal neglect.

A USDA spokesperson says the Northern Great Plains Research Laboratory in Mandan follows "strict guidelines and safety standards under the Animal Welfare Act."  National research watchdog group SAEN says documents show multiple unnecessary animal deaths at NGPRL, including examples of cows who were denied veterinary care.

SAEN is calling for staff firings and a federal investigation into the lab's practices.
