(St. Paul, MN) -- Minnesota health officials say a highly contagious omicron variant has been detected in Twin Cities wastewater.

Researchers say omicron BA.2 is 30-to-50-percent more infectious than the previous variant. It's unclear if the immunity protections offered by previous COVID-19 illnesses will fight off the new subvariant.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say the BA.2 subvariant has been found in most states and accounts for nearly four percent of all cases nationwide.
