(St. Paul, MN) -- Minnesota's 2021 death toll is coming in higher than expected.

Health officials say there were more than 51-thousand deaths in the state last year, up 15-percent from 2020. Officials say more than five-thousand COVID-19 deaths account for most of the increase.

An increase in opioid overdose deaths also contributed significantly to the increase.
