(Minneapolis, MN) -- The University of Minnesota is asking the Legislature for 30-million dollars to create a new scholarship program.

The Greater Minnesota Scholarship Program would offer fund to resident students who enroll as freshman at its Duluth, Rochester, Crookston, and Morris campuses. Scholarships would amount to four- to five-thousand first students' first year, and one- to two-thousand each of the next three years.

University leaders say the program would lower the average student debt for graduates.
