Crookston - The American Red Cross has opened a shelter at the Crookston Sports Center, 801 Fischer Avenue, to shelter residents forced from their homes by rising floodwaters.

The agency will help affected residents with a safe place to stay, food, and other necessary items, as well as health and mental health services, and one-on-one support to connect them with available recovery assistance.

The National Weather Service is predicting the river will crest near 29 feet sometime between Monday and Tuesday. The highest crest of the Red Lake River at Crookston came in 1997 when it hit 28.4 feet.
