(Minneapolis, MN) -- Two years after asking the Minneapolis Police Department to leave campus, U of M leaders are welcoming officers back and asking them to keep the campus safe.

University President Joan Gabel Wednesday said the school is asking the city's police department to pick-up extra patrols on weekends to keep students safe.

The U of M cut ties with Minneapolis police following George Floyd's death back in 2020. The school, like the rest of the city, has seen a spike in crime since.

Gable says students need to feel safe while at the university.
