Study: North Dakota ranks first in money lost to Cybercrime

(Fargo, ND) -- Americans are spending more time on the internet than ever before, and cybercrime is skyrocketing.

This means the chances are you or someone you know has been impacted by malicious activity done via the internet as a new study found 58% of Americans have fallen victim.

A new report from ThirdPartyTrust analyzed FBI data to find which states have the most cybercrime in the U.S. and just how costly these scams can be, and as it turns out North Dakota ranks first in the U.S. when it comes to amount lost per victim. 

When you take the total reported loss in North Dakota divided by the number of victims, North Dakota residents lost an average of $32,016.17 to cybercrime in 2021.

Other report highlights include:

• Only 68% of those scammed actually reported the crime
• Average amount lost to cybercrime per person (including unreported): $285 
• 30% of Americans have sent money online to someone they have never met
• Most common scam in US: non-payment/non-delivery scams

The most common ways Americans protect themselves online is by using strong passwords (85%), two-factor authentication (80%), and backing up their data (58%).
