(Bismarck, ND) -- Governor Doug Burgum and other officials are weighing in on the campaign to keep the wild horses in Theodore Roosevelt National Park.

Burgum submitted a letter Monday to the National Park Service indicating his support for the horses. The state's Department of Commerce, the Dickinson Convention and Visitors Bureau, and the Theodore Roosevelt Medora Foundation also signed on to the letter.

The letter cites benefits to tourism and the local economy, along with the historical value of maintaining a herd of wild horses in the park.

Governor Burgum says a balance can be determined between protecting wildlife and maintaining the bison.
