Outdoors Angle: Ice Fishing "Community" Spots

The Flag Outdoors Expert Steve Carney has your weekly Outdoors Angle right here!

This early season has been a tough one on the ice so far with balmy temperatures making our lake choices very limited. I have been fishing smaller, back bays off of main basins and I am not alone! The few spots with good ice have attracted hundreds of ice anglers and we have basically been forced to fish what I call "community" spots. I normally stay away from the crowds summer and winter but this is a fact of life so far this winter season.

The best thing you can do is try and get to outside of the community spots and target those fish that have been pressured off the community spots. Typically the community spots feature water in the 8 to 11 foot depths but I try and move out to 12 to 18 feet to catch those fish that are not bothered. ATV's are just starting to come out in these areas and the noise and people traffic can and will shut down these popular areas.

As the cold sets in here shortly, the pressure on the community spots will wane and more opportunities will open up as we get better ice. There's lot of room out there in lakes country, you just have to be patient and wait until Mother Nature comes through for us!
