Outdoors Angle: Walleyes At Night

The Flag Outdoors Expert Steve Carney has your weekly Outdoors Angle right here!

As we enter the middle of May, the walleye crowds have descended on our lakes and the fishing is good! I recommend anglers spend some time fishing walleyes during the nighttime period as the people have left for the day and the low light after dark tends to get the walleyes very active.  I like to troll small, thin crank baits in the shallows and spend most of my time in the spawning areas that feature fist-sized rocks and rip rap. The male walleyes will hang around their spawning grounds well into May and they are very active while the larger females are recovering from the spawn in deeper water.

Lighted bobbers are also wonderful to use after dark. They feature a small well-lit battery that shows up well after dark. There is nothing better than watching your lighted bobber sink into the drink after a walleye bite! Leeches are your best bet on lighted bobbers. Anglers using minnows after dark tend to catch more smallmouth bass and northern pike.

Do yourself a favor and rest during the daylight hours and wake up refreshed and hit the water about 7PM. Give it a few hours and you'll be amazed at the action well into midnight. Be safe, wear your life vests and make sure your bow and transom boat lights are working.
