Outdoors Angle: The Incredible Devils Lake Walleyes

The Flag Outdoors Expert Steve Carney has your weekly Outdoors Angle right here!

After just returning from a successful trip to Devils Lake in North Dakota, I have to say this waterway rates in my top 5 lakes of all time. The numbers of walleyes and the average size is most amazing.

My first day there I had absolutely no idea where the fish were. I had no intel and just went out and looked for fish on my own. It took me three hours to find them and when I did, it was lights out!

One thing about Devils Lake is when you find fish at a certain depth, you stay at that depth all day. 19 feet was the ticket both days. These walleyes tend to hang out in a particular depth where the oxygen is best and their food sources are located. It's all about boat control. Those anglers that can hold their boat at 19 feet and stay there are the most successful. Some anglers tend to wander in various depths and maybe you'll get a fish here and there. Stay focused and concentrate on the golden depth and you will be rewarded.

Crawlers and leeches are best right now by using a basic live bait rig with a long leader or a 1/16th .oz jig adorned with a crawler.  Spinners and bottom bouncers are just starting to become effective.

The key to my success was using my electronics to scan breaklines and humps and only fishing that spot if I "marked" fish on the screen. On Devils Lake, if you mark 'em you'll catch 'em!

The best fishing of the year is happening right now. This lake tends to green up and algae becomes an issue into the midsummer.
