Outdoors Angle: Dealing With Mid-Summer Weed Growth

The Flag Outdoors Expert Steve Carney has your weekly Outdoors Angle right here!

Wow, what an unusual fishing season! The extended hot weather has accelerated the weed growth, algae growth and also we are suffering from very low water levels.

My biggest issue on the water has been trying to fish around and through the extended weed growth which has hampered my ability to properly present my baits. There are a few things you can do to assist you in presenting your baits such as switching over to "bullet" type sinkers on your live bait rigs which tend to swim through most of the weed growth. I have a lot of success by switching over to small jigs with spinning blades below the shaft which gives the jig a lift and keeps it hovering above the weeds. Regular jigs tend to sink too fast and the vast weed growth really affects your performance.

Experimentation on the weedlines is necessary because now we are faced with weeds as deep as 22 feet on many lakes here in the north versus the usual 8 to 12 feet. This makes your old spots rather worthless and you have to re-invest your time into finding new areas.

Mother Nature has really thrown us a curve this season and it looks like the hot weather will persist... pray for rain as our lake levels are still falling in a big way.
