Outdoors Angle: Shopping For Open Water Electronics

The Flag Outdoors Expert Steve Carney has your weekly Outdoors Angle right here!

Anglers seem to think the more they spend on open water electronics the more successful they will be. It doesn't work that way.

I have always been very practical in my electronic choices when I re-rig my boats in the Spring. A standard chartplotter/graph unit can be as cheap as 250.00 and as expensive as 3500.00. It all boils down to the amenities such as side-imaging, faster processors, touch-screen ability, etc. The two main things you need to have is the chartplotter and a decent graph. I have never been a fan of side-imaging or using Livescope types of units. Some anglers swear by them but I guess I am more traditional and less techy!

Most anglers buy their open water electronics or upgrade what they have around March and April. I suggest scouring the internet and find some discontinued graph units and look for a deal. The difference in performance from year to year is pretty standard among all the units. The basics are a good chartplotter and a decent graph with the quality to show fish and read hard and soft bottoms. Most modern graphs will do a fine job no matter what the brand.
