Outdoors Angle: Pick Up Your Trash!

The Flag Outdoors Expert Steve Carney has your weekly Outdoors Angle right here!

As we get to the end of the ice fishing season here in the midwest, it is very important that all of us make sure that we leave nothing behind on the ice as we remove our hard houses off the lakes.

We have all seen news accounts of videos of trash left behind by ice anglers and it gives us all a black eye. This publicity is not good for the sport.

The most common item left behind are the wooden chocks we use to lift our hard houses off the ice. Many times these wooden boards are frozen in the ice and very difficult to remove. This is where a good quality spud or ice pick can come in handy to pry those boards off the ice. Leaving them behind is a total eyesore and they will remain there until the Spring thaw.

Make sure you pick up all debris such as cans, wrappers and anything that can harm the lake and pollute the water.

Fortunately we have a lot of angler groups that spend a lot of time cleaning up the trash that anglers have left behind. That's not a fun job but you have to give them credit for spending their valuable time cleaning up after their fellow ice anglers.

I once came upon an old ice fishing spot that the anglers had left 30 beer cans in a plastic bag on the ice. It was partially frozen into the ice so I had to chisel the cans out. Please...do the right thing and pick up your trash. We owe this to the resource itself and to the angling public.
