Outdoors Angle: Do Your Homework!

The Flag Outdoors Expert Steve Carney has your weekly Outdoors Angle right here!

As we struggle through this nasty Spring weather and await open water, now is a great time to do your "homework!" By this I mean get on the internet and start researching lakes in your area. We have so much information at our fingertips that with a little effort you can find some real gems. I basically pick a few lakes that I know nothing about and start surfing the DNR and GF & P websites and review the netting and shocking results as well as the stocking reports. This information is out there for you to discover. My routine every day during April is to research at least 3 lakes a day. You will come across a lot of mediocrity in lakes but every now and then you hit a real good lake with great potential.

One of the biggest keys to this research is to make sure you get the correct date of the survey. Many surveys are 10 years old and antiquated and these old surveys are pretty useless. Look for lakes with a survey that was done within the last 2 to 7 years as these figures and numbers will still be relevant.

Now that we have the downtime and wait for the ice to leave our lakes, spend some time doing your research and be ready to hit those new lakes in a few weeks and be armed with the knowledge to be successful.
