Incoming North Dakota State freshman pitcher Jonah Tong has been selected by the New York Mets. He was taken in the seventh round with the 209th overall pick in the 2022 MLB Draft on Monday afternoon.
Tong pitched in the MLB Draft League for the Frederick Keys through the spring. In 2021 the 6-foot-1 right-handed pitcher tallied a 3-2 record with 51 strikeouts over 28 ⅓ innings of work. Tong had a 3.21 ERA with Bill Crothers Secondary School in 2021 while also limiting batters to a .151 batting average.
The Markham, Ontario native, is now the 12th Bison to be selected in the MLB Draft since 1968 and sixth since 2013. The most recent Bison drafted before today was infielder Bennett Hostetler, who was selected in the 18th round by the Miami Marlins last season.
