Here we go! My favorite time of the Fall when the archery/deer season gets underway. As always, September and even early October can be really tough going. It has been extremely slow for me so far as the oceans of corn and beans are keeping the deer well fed. The warm temperatures have kept the deer movements very late at night. The good news is the harvest will begin soon, knocking down the standing crops and kicking the deer into the woods where we have better opportunities.

The key to early archery deer is to not get too discouraged. The main deer movements have been well after legal shooting and you can get down on yourself rather easily. Keep the faith! Know that things will improve when temperatures cool and the pre-rut begins in mid-October. Also know the later into Fall we get the better the hunting will be.

I have been sticking to late afternoon-evening hunts so far this Spring as I believe walking into these areas during the morning tends to blow the deer out of an area. It's almost impossible to get into a morning stand without them knowing you are there. Remember, they live there and know when something has changed.

Hang in there... It's just going to get better!
