Game on! We are right now into the what we call the early walleye bite and its happening. We have some very good ice conditions, for a change, making ice travel possible with snowmobiles and ATV's. I wouldn't recommend anything larger vehicle wise for a while yet, especially on the bigger water.

Walleyes are now shoreline related in depths of 8 to 11 feet and very aggressive during low light periods of morning and evening. I have been very successful using large jigging spoons tipped with a minnow head. Aggressive lifts and drops triggers those walleyes even when they are in a neutral mood. Walleyes this shallow are there for one thing only and that's to eat.

The bite has been intense but short lived. The window of best action seems to be about 45 minutes at sunset which is rather typical of December walleyes. Expect this shallow water action to last about two weeks before they make a subtle change to deeper water. Right now is the best time of the ice season to get after those walleyes, especially the bigger fish that tend to bite during this early ice period.
