Moorhead boys basketball are heading to a third straight Section Championship Game!

Last night the No. 2 seeded Moorhead Spuds boys basketball team had to battle the No. 3 seeded Brainerd Warriors in the Section 8AAAA Semifinals. The Spuds won their only regular season meeting 72-66 on Feb. 22 at Moorhead High.

This time around Brainerd had a hot start and led 32-29 at the half, thanks to 22 points combined from Nick Evanson and John Pecarich. In the second half Moorhead would get the offense going and eventually took down the Warriors 77-70.

Moorhead was led by 23 points from Minnesota State University Moorhead commit Adam Jenkins. Other scorers for the Spuds were Colton Hagen (18), Dylan Zimmerman (13), D.J. Smith (12), Brian Zarazua (9), and Michael Haugo (2).

As for Brainerd, they were led by Bemidji State commit Pecarich’s 30 points. The Warriors only had five total players score including Evanson (25), Eli Hoelz (11), Garrett Gilbert (2), and Jonathan Benson (2).

The Spuds are now advancing to a third consecutive Section 8AAAA Championship Game. They will take on No. 2 seeded Buffalo. The Bison won the only regular season matchup 73-62 at Buffalo High School.

The game will be played tomorrow night (3/17) at Sartell High School with tip set for 7 p.m. Larry Knutson will be on the play-by-play call on WDAY Radio.
