Closure of Tyrque Jones case renews search for Azeem Holmes’ killer

FARGO, N.D. – The closure of the case that pointed at Tyrque Jones as the suspect in the August killing of Azeem Holmes in downtown Fargo leads to a renewed search for the killer.

Jones was arrested Wednesday in Hennepin County after being on the run for four months as police searched for him as the suspect in the shooting that took place in downtown Fargo.

He is set to be released after Fargo Police interviewed him in jail, reviewed information given to him and a second look at video evidence — all of which pointed at him not being the suspect in the case.

But Fargo Police are being tight-lipped about a new suspect.

“We’re not in a position to identify a new suspect at this time, but as we continue to work with the new information, I’m confident our detectives will be able to identify a new suspect and we will push that out to the community once we can make that determination,” Fargo Police Captain Matt Christensen said.

He said Fargo Police will ‘put as many resources’ as they can into finding the responsible party, working with local and regional partners – in addition to requesting the public’s help.

Christensen said that ‘while this development represents a change in direction, it might be disappointing to some.’

“Our commitment to justice and public safety remains unwavering, and I’m confident we will identify and locate the person responsible for this crime as quickly as we possibly can,” he said.

Fargo Police continue to attempt to locate people involved in the incident – most who were witnesses.

Christensen said police are working through determining whether or not they’re looking for a singular suspect or multiple suspects in the case. Police still say the case is connected to ongoing feud between two groups of people.
