SAINT PAUL, MINN. – The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension said the Federal Bureau of Investigation won’t give the agency access to any information or evidence into the shooting death of Alex Pretti.
The intensive care nurse was shot and killed by two Border Patrol agents while protesting Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in Minneapolis. Department of Justice officials have said Pretti was interfering with agents. Others, like Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, have said Pretti was trying to help a woman agents pushed to the ground.
“While this lack of cooperation is concerning and unprecedented, the BCA is committed to thorough, independent and transparent investigations of these incidents, even if hampered by a lack of access to key information and evidence,” BCA Superintendent Drew Evans said. “Our agency has committed to the FBI and Department of Justice that should its stance change we remain willing to share information that we have obtained with that agency and would welcome a joint investigation.”
The BCA has also asked the FBI for information and access to evidence in the shooting death of Renee Good and the shooting of Julio Sosa-Celis.
Good was shot and killed by an ICE agent while driving in Minneapolis. DOJ officials said she ignored agents’ orders to get out of her vehicle when it was blocking a road and struck one of the officers.
Venezuelan man Sosa-Celis, who is in the country illegally, was shot in the leg by ICE officers the DOJ hasn’t named after they say he and another man came at them with a shovel and a broomstick.
Charges against the men have been dropped and the federal government has started a criminal investigation against the officers looking into whether they lied about the shooting under oath.
Anyone with information about the shooting of Alex Pretti, Renee Good or Julio Sosa-Celis is asked to contact the BCA at 651-793-7000 or by emailing bca.tips@state.mn.us.
