MOORHEAD, Minn. (Valley News Live) – A Moorhead man faces a felony assault charge after authorities say he stabbed another man inside an apartment Sunday morning.

Dallas Jay White, 34, of Moorhead, is charged with second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon, a felony that carries a maximum sentence of seven years in prison, a $14,000 fine, or both.

According to court documents filed Monday in Clay County District Court, Clay County deputies and Moorhead police responded to a reported stabbing at an address on Sunrise Circle on March 8, 2026. When officers arrived, a woman exiting the building told them White had stabbed her boyfriend.

Court documents say White had been arguing with his girlfriend throughout the morning before leaving the apartment. When he returned, without her, witnesses say he was visibly upset. He went to a back room, then entered the kitchen where the victim was cooking.

According to the complaint, White approached the victim from behind, shouldering him. When the victim turned around, White was holding a butcher knife with a red handle. Court documents allege White grabbed the victim’s head with one hand and stabbed him with the other.

The victim suffered a U-shaped laceration approximately 2 to 3 inches long on the top of his head, along with a second smaller cut near the back of his head. He was transported to a hospital emergency room, where medical personnel cleaned the wounds. Stitches were not required.

White told a Clay County deputy he grabbed the knife from the ground because he believed the victim was about to reach for it first. He also told investigators the victim struck him in the forearm with a bike handlebar during the altercation. Deputies noted an abrasion on White’s left forearm.
