Body recovered in Mississippi River near Bemidji

BEMIDJI, MINN – A man’s body was recovered Friday near Bemidji.

The Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office received a report Friday afternoon just before 4:45 p.m. that a vehicle traveled northbound on Sunnyside Road and left the roadway, entering the Mississippi River after traveling through a residential yard. The reporting party said no one exited the vehicle before it became submerged.

Emergency responders arrived and were informed the vehicle was believed to still be occupied after bystanders attempted to assist the occupant of the vehicle before it became submerged.

Attempts were made to extricate the male, necessitating the response of the Lakes Area Dive Team. The lone occupant of the vehicle, an adult male, was recovered at approximately 6:30 p.m. and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Sheriff Jason Riggs said the investigation is ongoing.
