FARGO, N.D. (Valley News Live) — A California ultra runner 157 days into a quest to cross all 50 states on foot arrived at Broadway Square on Monday afternoon, March 23. Noah Coughlan entered Fargo with a police escort, having already covered more than 3,100 miles.

The 41-year-old ultra runner from Vacaville, California, is on his fifth solo run across America in 15 years. He aims to complete this run by July 4 to honor the country’s 250th birthday.

“Because it ends on July 4th 2026 here on America’s 250th birthday, I wanted to show the American people from town to town, state to state. And it’s a message of unity, it’s a message of peace, it’s a statement that we’re stronger together,” Coughlan said.

A few fans turned out to meet him and take photos as he passed through around 2 p.m.

“Your local police department reached out to me and your city officials and welcomed me… just in the first mile here, the beauty of the city — wonderful people here in Fargo,” Coughlan said.

North Dakota marks his 47th state. With only Hawaii, Alaska and Oregon remaining, Coughlan is on track to become only the third person in history to cross all 50 states entirely on foot.

He has 2,400 miles remaining and expects to finish his final run by day 260.
