City Administrator Redlinger speaks on interim police department leadership, timeline for new leadership search

FARGO, N.D. – After the Fargo City Commission approved appointing Travis Stefonowicz as the interim police chief, City Administrator Michael Redlinger spoke about the interim leadership team.

“(I have) full confidence and full belief that our interim leadership is going to do a great job in this interim period,” he said.

During the last search for the chief, in 2020, riots were happening across the country — and locally.

“(When) you look at the photos, you look at the imagery of 2020, it was a pretty challenging time, certainly, for us to conduct that search as well,” Redlinger said.

Stefonowicz will lead the team until a new leader is chosen later this summer.

Timeline for search for new Police Chief

The Fargo City Commission was also briefed on the timeline for the search for Fargo’s next Chief of Police.

City Commissioner Denise Kolpack talked about the need for community engagement.

“The more we can talk about this and bring them along, and be part of it sincerely, the more important it’s going to be for the final selection and the success,” she said.

The application period begins May 11 and ends June 19, according to a timeline provided by City Administrator Michael Redlinger.

An offer could be made as soon as August.
