Spirit Lake Reservation impacted by wildfires

FORT TOTTEN, N.D. – The Spirit Lake Fire Department responded to multiple wild fire incidents in the Fort Totten area between last night and early this morning.

The first call – reported at around 5 p.m. Wednesday, burned approximately 200 acres and prompted a community alert due to potential risks to homes. No homes were lost and the fire was contained, according to tribal officials. Additional fire calls were responded to, including a fire that burned approximately 900 acres and threatened nearby structures – but was contained before any damage was done.

“With the current dry conditions, high winds, and lack of precipitation, our area is at a heightened risk for wildfire. We are asking the public to stay clear of active scenes and report any fires immediately by calling 911 so we can respond as quickly and safely as possible,” said fire chief Joe Jetty.

A burn restriction is in effect for the Spirit Lake Reservation.
