UPDATE – The Moorhead Police Department says the department believes the candy handed out by students at Horizon Middle School’s East Campus had THC and none of the about 10 students involved have been cooperating with officers.
Police responded around 12:45 PM on Monday, May 18. Two students were taken to the hospital. The rest were released to their parents or guardians.
School staff immediately contacted Emergency Medical Services and first responders came to the school.
The school district says no more details about the students will be released since minors are involved.
“This is a really unfortunate situation. As a parent with children in the MAPS system, I understand and relate to the concerns being raised within our community,” Moorhead Police Chief Chris Helmick said. “We will continue to work with Moorhead Area Public Schools as we investigate the incident and determine how we can prevent something like this from happening again. We also strongly encourage parents and guardians of children of all ages to speak with their kids about the importance of not consuming candy, food, or other items when they do not know exactly what they are.”
