Two charged following assault-turned-fatal

 

A victim of an assault in Hawley, Minn., is dead, and two others are in jail in connection to the fatal assault.

According to Hawley Police Chief Joe Backlund, the assault occurred sometime on April 2. At 10:30 p.m. on April 2, Hawley Police responded to the 2300 block of Meadow Lane in Hawley for a call of suspicious activity involving an individual ringing doorbells and knocking on doors. An officer made contact with an adult male, learning he was the victim of an assault that took place inside an area residence. The victim, a 50-year-old male, was transported to a Fargo hospital where he was treated and was released and then transported to the Clay County Jail in Moorhead on charges of Assault. It was learned during the investigation that another male, 52-year-old Moorhead resident, had also been assaulted inside the residence and was transported to a Fargo hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries.

A Bemidji resident, 40-year-old female, was arrested for DWI and Assault and was transported to the Clay County Jail. A Hawley resident, 55-year-old male, was arrested for a Department of Corrections violation and transported to the Clay County Jail. The incident is still under investigation. All parties were known to each other.

The 52-year-old Moorhead resident has since died.

The 50-year-old male, identified as Christopher Vincent Greywater, no permanent address, is charged with second degree murder without intent, while committing a felony. The 40-year-old female, identified as Devonna Rae Waybenais, is charged with second degree assault with a dangerous weapon and second degree DWI – alcohol – over .16 within two hours of driving.
