U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp is encouraging North Dakota high school students to apply for the United States Senate Youth Program that provides students with an in-depth experience of our nation’s democracy during the week they spend in Washington, D.C.

“Every year, two ambitious and motivated North Dakotans are selected as North Dakota’s delegates to the U.S. Senate Youth Program,” said Heitkamp. “These high school students represent the best of their class and have proven they are committed to bettering their schools, communities, state, and country. I encourage students to apply before the October 15 deadline to be delegates in 2019. North Dakota’s delegates have always shown the best of our state – they are eager, passionate, and ready to learn – and I hope students apply to take advantage of this opportunity.”

The U.S. Senate Youth Program is a competitive merit based program that was established in 1962 through a U.S. Senate Resolution to support the next generation’s understanding of our nation’s three branches of government and why it’s important to be involved in our democracy.

The U.S. Senate Youth Program awards two students from each state with a $10,000 scholarship and a week long experience in Washington, D.C. to experience our democracy in action. Students interested in applying must have their application in by October 15, 2018 and should reach out to Patricia Laubach at the North Dakota Department of Public Instruction by phone at (701)328-4525 or by e-mail atplaubachatnd [dot] gov (plaubach)
