Final Rate Release Shows Republican Reforms Continue Lower Health Care Costs

On Tuesday, the Minnesota Department of Commerce released final rates for the 2019 individual insurance market. For the second consecutive year, Republican-led reforms have proven to help reduce or hold flat individual market health insurance rates after years of double-digit increases following the implementation of Obamacare in Minnesota.

All five of the carriers on the individual market are lowering premiums for 2019, with average rates dropping between 7.4 percent and 27.7 percent. For example, a family of four from Grand Rapids could save $6,348 and a 61-year-old from the Twin Cities could save $4,296 next year as a result of Republican reforms compared to two years ago. The individual market serves Minnesotans who buy health insurance on their own, not through an employer or the government.

“Today’s final rate release shows that Minnesota Republicans have the right approach to making health insurance more affordable for families in our state,” said House Speaker Kurt Daudt, R-Crown. “While Democrats continue to double down on Obamacare and MNsure’s mistakes, our plan is proving to lower costs and increase choice. Republican leadership in the legislature continues to deliver on our promise to lower health care costs for Minnesotans.”

“In 2017, Minnesotans were facing up to 67 percent increases in insurance premiums through MNsure. Now we’re celebrating up to 33 percent decreases for 2019. Republicans promised and delivered the bold reforms that led to this amazing turnaround,” said Sen. Michelle Benson, R-Ham Lake. “Families are finally experiencing the benefits of more affordable health insurance coverage. There’s more work to do, but we’re up to the challenge.”
