John Francis Murphy III, a 41 year old Grand Forks resident.

At 3:17am on July 8, 2018, Grand Forks Police Officers were dispatched to the 2200 block of South 22 nd
Street in response to the report of a suicidal subject, armed with a firearm.
As this investigation remains active, minimal specific details can be released at this time. The Grand Forks
Police Department can confirm that the deceased subject is the same subject that was reported as being
possibly suicidal, armed with a firearm.
Additionally, officers encountered the deceased subject and a female family member soon after arriving on-
scene, and both subjects were armed with firearms. The family member immediately complied with officer
directions and placed her firearm on the ground, and the deceased subject refused to cooperate.
The deceased male did not fire his firearm during the incident, though his subsequent actions presented a
perceived threat, resulting in two officers firing their firearms.
