A man is dead and a plane has been recovered from the Missouri River. The scene happened at approximately 2:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, when a witness called 9-1-1 after observing a plane flying at a low altitude and subsequently plunging into the Missouri River. According to the Morton County Sheriff’s Office, the water depth at the location of the crash is around five to six feet due to an underwater sandbar, so the plane was only partially submerged. First responders were able to extract the pilot from the cockpit, and the body was transported to the medical examiner’s office. The accident happened just north of the Fort Rice Recreation Area, just south of Mandan. Shortly after 8 a.m. this Wednesday morning, recovery efforts began to bring the plane out of the water. This afternoon, shortly before 1 p.m., the Morton County Sheriff’s Office reported that the plane had been recovered.
