(BISMARCK, ND) – A bill that would limit future North Dakota constitutional amendments to just one subject per proposal was passed by the House.
If eventually approved by voters, the measure would actually change the state constitution itself to include such language.
“This would be for amendments proposed by the legislature and through the people through the initiated process,” Rep. Steve Vetter told the House Tuesday.
House Majority Leader Mike Lefor, who is one of the bill’s sponsors, explained why he and others believe this is necessary.
“This measure provides clarity in stopping those who wish to place multiple topics onto a measure to change our state’s constitution,” he said.
The House voted 68-25 to pass the resolution, which was approved earlier this session by the state Senate in a separate 46-1 vote.
The question would then be put to voters in the 2026 general election for final adoption.
