SAINT PAUL, Minn. – Republican State Senator Jordan Rasmusson of Fergus Falls is the chief author on a bill that will be introduced aiming to combat fraud in Minnesota programs.
The legislation would call for an automatic audit if a state department exceeds projected spending by 5%. If a state program exceeds projected spending by 10%, they would see additional review and involvement by the Legislature.
“We can pass different rules, laws and regulations, but we have to actually hold the agencies accountable for doing their job,” Rasmusson said.
Meanwhile, DFL State Senator Rob Kupec of Moorhead introduced a bill that passed in the Senate during last year’s session that would create an Office of the Inspector General to identify fraud and abuse in state programs. The OIG would also refer cases to the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, the Attorney General’s Office or law enforcement.
Kupec’s bill can still be considered in the House this session. The House didn’t take up the bill in 2025.
