FARGO, N.D. – Fargo City Public Works Director of Operations Ben Dow says 65 percent of water meters across the city have been upgraded to new meters.
The effort has been underway for a little more than a year.
“We’re talking (about) 30,000 meters across the City of Fargo,” Dow told commissioners last week at its regular meeting. “We just climbed over 20,000 meters installed.”
The implementation of the new system will help The City of Fargo with the collection of meter readings, provide customers with a better understanding of their water bills, and identify leaks that are responsible for much of the system’s treated water loss.
Those who fail to contact the city for installation will eventually face a $50 charge to their monthly bill.
“Hopefully they will contact us to start the process,” Dow said. “We want to work with our residents, not penalize them.”
The Commission 5-0 to move towards assessing the penalty and adding the option of a opt-out fee.
