Dr. Marshall Stewart named 16th president of North Dakota State University

FARGO, N.D. – Kansas State University executive vice president for external engagement Dr. Marshall Stewart has been named president of North Dakota State University.

“North Dakota State University has a strong foundation, a clear mission and a deep connection to the people it serves,” Stewart said. “NDSU’s impact is felt across the state and beyond, and I am honored by the opportunity to work alongside students, faculty, staff, alumni and partners to build on that legacy while positioning the university for the future.”

During an an on-campus visit last week, Stewart praised the university’s land grant status while sharing what he would focus on if he’s offered the position. He said he believes every student should have opportunities to learn internationally and get an internship.

“As a land grant university, our first customer are the people of North Dakota. We have to protect those people. It doesn’t mean we don’t do global things, it doesn’t mean we don’t do regional or national things. What it means is if you take care of North Dakotans, North Dakotans will take care of you,” Stewart explained.

Stewart said he wants to make sure a family or student’s income isn’t a barrier to tuition and build a culture of trust and believability.
