FARGO, N.D. (Valley News Live) – A former Cass County correctional deputy changed his plea to guilty Tuesday in connection with the assault of a jail inmate last summer.
Andrew Robinson entered a guilty plea to simple assault on February 17. He had previously pleaded not guilty to the charge in November 2025.
Judge Stephannie Stiel accepted the plea and issued a deferred imposition of sentence, meaning if Robinson completes the terms of his probation, the conviction could be dismissed from his record.
Robinson must complete one year of unsupervised probation and perform 40 hours of community service by August 31, 2026.He is also prohibited from violating any criminal laws during his probation period, which runs through Feb. 12, 2027.
The charge stems from the assault of an inmate at the Cass County Jail on July 31, 2025. Robinson was placed on administrative leave the following day after the incident was reported.
Sheriff Jesse Jahner requested that the North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation conduct an independent investigation to ensure an unbiased review of the allegations.
Following the completion of both the criminal investigation and an internal review, Robinson was terminated from the Cass County Sheriff’s Office in August 2025.
The case was referred to the Cass County State’s Attorney’s Office for prosecution after the BCI completed its investigation.
Simple assault is a Class B misdemeanor in North Dakota.
