Gov. Tim Walz releases anti-fraud plan, GOP says he’s feeling the heat over fraud he’s enabled

SAINT PAUL, Minn. – Minnesota Governor Tim Walz shared his legislative package aimed at preventing, detecting, investigating, and holding accountable those who commit fraud in state programs.

It expands audit and internal control capacity to make sure money is properly spent and misused dollars are recovered, uses predictive analytics and machine learning to identify suspicious billing earlier, establishes an Office of the Inspector General, enhances authority for on-site investigations across Minnesota health care programs and establishes permanent bans from state contracts and grants for individuals convicted of fraud, including new businesses and subcontractors.

“I’m proud of the work I’ve done here. I think we’ve made transformational changes. We’re the fourth-best state for lack of corruption. Corruption is very different from fraud. It’s very important to me because, personally, my fiscal responsibility side, I’ve always hung my hat on that,” Walz said.

“Democrats in Minnesota are feeling the heat over the fraud they’ve enabled for years, and now they’re doing damage control. Governor Walz would rather talk about President Trump than the culture of fraud in his agencies which he’s allowed to continue unchecked for his entire seven years in office,” Minnesota Speaker of the House Lisa Demuth said.
