FARGO, N.D. (Valley News Live) – Actor Josh Duhamel returned to his home state Wednesday to premiere his new film, “Preschool,” at the Fargo Film Festival.
The film follows two fathers competing for the last open spot at a top-notch preschool in London. Duhamel said the story is one parents — and non-parents alike — can relate to.
“We went through the rocket that is school admissions,” Duhamel said.
“Not so much in North Dakota, I went to public school in North Dakota. I vowed I was never going to fall into this trap when I’m out there. Sure enough, I did. I got to see firsthand what extremes parents will go to to get their kid an upper hand or a leg up.”
‘We will absolutely do anything for our kids’
Duhamel said the film’s themes connect with audiences in the Red River Valley, regardless of whether they have children.
“Anybody with kids or anybody that knows people that have kids, understands we will absolutely do anything for our kids,” Duhamel said.
“I think maybe this movie gives a little perspective on how crazy we can be as parents sometimes. At the end of the day, we just have to let them be kids.”
A father of two, with his wife expecting a baby girl, Duhamel said returning to the region helps keep his family grounded.
“L.A. can eat you up and spit you out,” Duhamel said.
“There’s a lot of great things about Los Angeles but it doesn’t compare to North Dakota.”
Fargo Theatre milestone, festival’s top honor
With the Fargo Theatre marking its 100th anniversary, Duhamel said the timing made the premiere especially meaningful.
“This is one of my dreams to be able to take a movie back here and premiere it in front of all my friends and family,” Duhamel said.
In addition to the premiere, Duhamel was presented with the Ted M. Larson Award, the Fargo Film Festival’s highest honor.
