(St. Paul, MN) -- Minnesota state Senator Kent Eken says he won't run again.

The Majority Whip says legislative redistricting and a desire to return to teaching were among the factors that affected his decision.

“While Democrats have increasingly moved farther to the left, Senator Eken had an ability to often defy the extremes of his party," said Republican Candidate for State Senate District Four Joe Brannan. "No matter if you are a Democrat, Republican or Independent we are all going to need to work together to solve the issues facing our state. I wish Senator Eken the best in his retirement. My strong commitment to public service led me into this race, and it is now even more crucial we elect a Senator who understands the needs of Northwest Minnesota.”

Eken represents the current District 4, which will see its boundaries changed during the upcoming election cycle.

“I thank Senator Eken for his two decades of service to Northwestern Minnesota, and I wish him well in his future endeavors," said fellow GOP candidate for State Senate Dan Bohmer. "I believe this announcement is due, in part, to the tremendous grassroots support of our campaign to bring a positive change in our state. We must all work together to tackle rising costs, reduce job-killing taxes, and ensure everyone feels safe in their community. My campaign to be a strong voice for Northwestern Minnesota in the legislature continues as I travel across the district listening to everyone I hope to serve.”

Eken sits on the Aging and Long-Term Care Policy committee and the Agriculture and Rural Development Finance and Policy committee.
