North Dakota Board of Optometry responding after hundreds of patient records were found in Fargo dumpster

(Fargo, ND) -- The President of the North Dakota State Board of Optometry says the board will review the matter involving hundreds of patient records found in a Fargo dumpster. 

WDAY News First recovered 15 boxes of records and documents from the dumpster off University Drive back in February, after we were contacted by a concerned citizen. 

The documents appear to have come from the West Fargo office of optometrist Dr. Gregory Dye. 

"We have communicated with the doctor in question.  We have a board meeting next week on Friday (April 14th) at 11:00am and this topic is on the agenda for discussion.  There is no written complaint so the information we have gathered is not public yet," wrote Brian Beattie in a statement to WDAY News First.

The documents recovered include roughly 350 patient records, insurance documents, tax records, unopened mail, and receipts. 

WDAY News First has offered to turn the documents over to the state board, but the board has not yet indicated whether it intends to take possession of the documents. 

Dr. Dye has not responded to requests for comment.
