Governor Burgum on Fargo Public Schools transgender stance: they should "read the law"

(Fargo, ND) -- Governor Doug Burgum is reacting to the announcement by Fargo Public Schools that the district will ignore new state laws pertaining to transgender students.

"I know that there's been, there was discussion about outing, there's nothing in this law that says, it just says that a school district and a teacher can't conceal or withhold information that a parent requests. That's just common sense," said Burgum.

Burgum says district officials should "read the law" and says he's not sure "what they're defying".

One of the new laws states that teachers and administrators can't withhold information from parents or guardians related to how a student self-identifies while on campus.

District Superintendent Dr. Ruplak Ghandi says the district stance is based on wanting to protect transgender students.
