(Fargo, ND) -- Fargo Mayor Tim Mahoney says the city will advocate against a proposed constitutional initiative aimed at eliminating property tax in North Dakota.

"We will look at what we can do. We're going to strongly advocate against it, because it just does not, the way the system works  now I think is very voter or taxpayer has a very big voice in that. Emails, voice calls, whatever you want to do Come to me anytime I do a budget or anytime I do anything else," said Mahoney.

Mahoney says if property tax is abolished, funding decisions for local projects would be made by state lawmakers in Bismarck.

He says funding control needs to remain at the local level.

Former State Representative Rick Becker says he expects the secretary of state to approve the petition drive request for the initiative next week.
