U.S Senator John Hoeven to fight for federal help in bringing more low income housing to F-M Metro

(Fargo, ND) -- Several local and state leaders met under one roof on Tuesday to talk about affordable housing and how it can be achieved across the state of North Dakota, and potentially the nation. 

U.S Senator John Hoeven joined Fargo Mayor Tim Mahoney, Fargo Commissioners John Strand and Denise Kolpack, and other state leaders to tour the Milton Earl Apartments, an apartment building under construction that intends on bringing 42 low cost housing units for people ages 62 and older. Hoeven says multiple factors go into making apartments affordable for low income residents; but he says the largest part is focusing on public-private partnerships to get the job done. 

“As North Dakota continues to grow due to our dynamic economy, we need affordable housing options for residents, particularly in the Fargo-Moorhead region,” said Hoeven. “Lashkowitz Riverfront and Milton Earl are examples of the kinds of projects we need to meet this demand. These efforts will provide, updated, high-quality apartments with access to amenities that any tenant would value. We’ve worked to ensure the federal supports are in place to advance such important projects, both in the Red River Valley and across the state.”

Senator Hoeven says he is hoping to gather more federal funds for low income housing projects for not only Fargo residents. The senator says he will look to craft legislation that would allocating low income housing funds that are not being used in some states and allocating those dollars to places that will use them. The idea, which Hoeven credits to Commissioner John Strand, would take federal backing, but he believes is likely to be bipartisan in its support.
