Cass County Sheriff on jail overcrowding: "we are really struggling right now"

(Fargo, ND) -- Cass County Sheriff Jesse Jahner says he and his staff "are really struggling right now" because of overcrowding at the jail.

"We've got a lot of people in custody. We are over capacity. Last week I think we were around 400. Our capacity is 348. We've got people spread out around different jails throughout the state. Our new pod is going to be built in a year. That will give us 192 beds but right now that has been a day-to-day struggle for us," said Jahner.

Jahner says arrests of homeless people are contributing in part to the jail being overcrowded.

He also points to a backlog of court cases caused delayed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The sheriff says population growth in Cass County is also a factor.
