Fargo city official: security improvements and review happening at city hall following commissioner's comments about personal safety

(Fargo, ND) -- WDAY Radio Now has been informed that the city of Fargo is reviewing security, and taking steps to improve security at city hall, after City Commissioner Dave Piepkorn decided not to attend the commission meeting Monday night, saying he was concerned for his personal safety.

Dozens of citizens were at the meeting urging the commission to pass a resolution calling for a ceasefire for the war in Gaza.

The following statement was provided to WDAY Radio by Chief Communications Officer Gregg Schildberger:

" City facilities, including the City Commission Chambers, serve as venues for public discourse as well as workplaces for public servants. To operate and maintain safe, welcoming and well-defined venues, The City of Fargo consistently reviews and enhances its practices, facility setups and security postures.

In consideration of feedback received by members of the public and staff members, the City Commission has requested a cross-section of City staff (including public safety) to undertake a process which will culminate in security enhancements across the organization.

While a handful of minor modifications have already been incorporated, the strategic assessment/response will be considered at a future meeting of the Commissioners.
The City of Fargo is committed to a continuous improvement process to provide the best and most secure experience for its residents, visitors and staff."

Schildberger turned down a request by WDAY Radio Now to be interviewed on the topic.
