(Fargo, ND) — North Dakota’s U.S. House Representative and state gubernatorial candidate says Fargo Public Schools doesn’t get the choice to avoid following state law related to pronoun and bathroom preference among students.
U.S. House Representative Kelly Armstrong was asked about Fargo Public Schools deferring to federal law over recently passed state law when it comes to new legislation that impacts LGBTQ+ youth. The state law would require district staff to notify parents if their kids are going by other pronouns or are utilizing other-gendered bathrooms. The district has cited Federal Laws as their reason for not following the state legislation.
“It doesn’t matter. Once the law is passed and its been passed by both chambers of North Dakota government and signed by the Governor, you don’t get the option of not doing it. You just don’t. It doesn’t matter what the law is, that’s not how our system works.”
Armstrong says he believes in local control, but also asserts organizations need to follow state law. He believes the district needs to sort out the issue through the courts and must follow the newly-passed law until a decision is made through the lawsuit.
