FARGO, N.D. – With frigid cold temperatures our area will be seeing the rest of the week, it’s important to make sure you’re staying safe while outdoors.
Flag Family Chief Meteorologist Dean Wysocki’s forecast has temperatures not getting out of the negatives from Thursday, January 22 to Sunday, January 25 and lows reaching -30 degrees.
Doctors say they typically see more people for frostbite and frostnip during weather like that.
“Within minutes we can see fairly severe frostbite injuries, so please make sure you’re prepared, wearing appropriate clothing, appropriate protective gear,” Essentia Health Emergency Medicine Dr. Chris Anderson said.
Frostnip is a milder form of exposure to the cold and can be taken care of if the body can be warmed quickly. With frostbite, you can lose function of the body part that’s affected. Symptoms include numbness, red or hard skin.
There’s even risks of corneal frostbite in the eyes with high winds and extremely cold temperatures.
The cold weather can also trigger hypothermia where symptoms include shivering, confusion, altered mental state and becoming tired.
Dr. Anderson said exercising in cold conditions is ok if you’re hydrated.
“As long as you’re properly dressed and prepared, I’m not overly concerned. I think it’s always a good idea to make sure someone knows of your plans so you have a buddy or have someone looking out for you so you come home when you’re planning to,” Anderson said.
If you’re going outside during the cold, make sure to wear layers of dry clothing that’s not too tight so it doesn’t impact blood flow.
