HORACE, N.D. (Valley News Live) – Prosecutors have filed manslaughter and three other felony charges against a 21-year-old Horace man in the shooting death of his girlfriend at a Horace apartment complex last week.
Derrick Lobbo has been formally charged with manslaughter, reckless endangerment with a firearm, aggravated assault, and child neglect following the death of 23-year-old Sakeena Khaadi, according to court documents filed November 10.
Khaadi was found dead with a gunshot wound in the hallway of an apartment building on November 6 after deputies responded to a disturbance call shortly after 8:00 a.m.
Details from court documents
According to a probable cause affidavit, Lobbo called 911, reporting his girlfriend had been hurt and needed help. Multiple callers reported an unresponsive female with blood coming from her mouth.
A caller told dispatchers a male said “the gun went off and hit the female in the chest,” court documents state. The caller described the male as wearing grey sweatpants and a black coat with blood on his hands.
Court documents state Lobbo advised deputies he had possession of the gun when it discharged, striking Khaadi. Deputies found a 9mm handgun on the floor near the kitchen island inside the apartment, along with a magazine and shell casing in the living room. Blood droplets were found on the couch and floor.
The medical examiner found Khaadi died from a gunshot wound to the chest. The bullet entered through her left forearm before striking her chest.
Child endangerment allegations
Court documents say Lobbo’s two-year-old child was left alone and unsupervised in the apartment after the shooting. The child had access to the firearm on the floor, as well as alcohol and marijuana found in the apartment.
Previous reporting
The Cass County Sheriff’s Office previously identified Khaadi as the victim during a press conference last week. Sheriff Jesse Jahner said Lobbo lived with Khaadi as her boyfriend and was arrested in connection with the incident.
Deputies had located the child during a safety sweep of the apartment. The child was unharmed but in close proximity to the firearm, Jahner said.
Lobbo was initially held on charges including reckless endangerment with extreme indifference involving a dangerous weapon, child neglect, and failure to appear warrants.
Lobbo is scheduled for arraignment at 1:30 p.m. Monday November 10 in Cass County court.
